Abstract

Sepsis is one of the most representative causes of morbidity and mortality in pediatric patients worldwide, conditioning one of the main problems of the health system and society, as it requires special care and expensive treatments; In relation to its pathophysiology in the last years has been discovered the participation of several genetic factors that predispose to the patient to suffer it, and mechanisms by which the inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines act; Further promising studies based on them are hopeful for prognosis. The present article aims to develop a manuscript with current concepts of sepsis compiled from different databases. It is very important the timely diagnosis of the entity for which acute-phase reactants of high sensitivity and specificity such as procalcitonin, IL-6 and TNF-alpha are currently available. The best therapeutic strategy should be adopted in order to improve the prognosis and impact on mortality.
